Night visitors

We've been testing out the new stealth camera in our wood!

We pointed it at the badger sett, but didn't get the badger footage we'd hoped for. Instead...

Based on the palmate(ish) antlers we think they're fallow deer in their dark winter coats - possibly even melanistic variations on the species.

We aim to get better at pointing the camera!

This is the coolest thing ever! We've often talked about getting a camera, though now that we're living in town, we would only see deer, raccoons, possums and foxes, and maybe the occasional coyote. (Okay, so we're on the edge of town, at the foot of a hill, next to a river, but still...) When we lived in the mountains, a mountain lion often stopped at our small fish pond for a drink, though we never saw him. Our neighbor did, and her reports made me feel as if I were walking an hors d'oeuvre on a leash when I took our little dog out at night.

This post of yours, however, has sent me into the webisphere in search of information on Fallow deer. Gorgeous creatures! We have mule deer, which are just big brutes that eat my roses, and the smaller coastal deer, which also eat my roses. My brother refers to them as rats on stilts, and when the get all the buds, I tend to agree! But they are really beautiful creatures--when not decimating my garden.
